Trigger Points & Massage

Myofascial Release/Dry Needling at SBR Sport.

I spend a fair portion of my day getting tight muscles and fascial systems to relax and rebalance. A number of athletes come in with injuries as well as people with pain linked to posture, stress and jobs that require a lot of sitting.

Myofascial Release/Massage.

Modalities include myofascial release, acupuncture/trigger point treatment, percussion instrumentation, the application of kinesiology tape etc.

  • Myofascial release has got to do with the release of both the muscle and the fascial structure that surrounds each muscle. Fascia links the entire body together and so plays a vital role in body balance.

  • Trigger Point Treatment – this has to do with tight muscle bands. These present as muscle knots that can be the size of a pea all the way through to an elongated, ropey section of painful muscle. These are treated with via massage, trigger point pressure and dry needles. Dry needling does not normally hurt and can give tremendous benefit. You can read more about dry needling here.

  • Percussion instruments. I have found this to be a really helpful and a great add on to general muscle work. You can read more about the approach here.
  • Cranial/Sacral work. I have moved away from the more traditional treatment and have found that I get better results when focusing on the Suboccipitals.

My background is in Kinesiology, Myofascial Release work, Sport injuries, Cranial/ Sacral work and Sport Science/Coaching.

Questions.

1. Why massage?

We all put our bodies under immense stress. Massage was developed to keep the body working efficiently and to aid in working out certain injuries. A  massage can help in the following:
– to get your body more relaxed.
– remove areas of tension.
– recover more quickly after hard training and racing.
– help the body cope with stress and trauma.
– help rebalance the body.
– improve immune system functioning.
– reduce headaches.
– by targeting specific areas you can accelerate sport injury recovery.
